Small airports now have the possibility to develop sophisticated instrument approach procedures that were not possible a mere five years ago. For example Barra airport in Northern Scotland. This is an unusual airport as it does not have a tarmac runway but does have scheduled air services. The runway is the beach and is only available at low tide. This airport now has satellite based LPV instrument approach procedures down to a minimum 700 ft cloud base. LPV approach procedures have also been designed for Cambletown and Benbecula airports and a further nine airports servicing the islands will have LPV procedures within the next year
