Turn ASAP

25.10.2004

Answer or Commentary:

It is my turn to throw a question to the panel. At the moment I am dealing with ILS approaches to parallel runways and the missed approach to one runway will "turn as soon as practicable". The "turn as soon as practicable" position is defined in Pans-Ops as the Start Of Climb (SOC) position. However what I am finding hard to determine is the Earliest Turning Point (ETP) and the Latest Turning Point (LTP).

If a pilot commences an early missed approach for technical reasons (i.e. the worst case being a missed approach from the final approach fix), how would the pilot determine the SOC or missed approach position to commence the turn? In this case any early turns would be a problem.

Maybe the pilots in the group could tell me what would actually occur in flight so that this possibility can be covered. At the moment the area seems a bit grey.

I.W.
