Transition Altitude _ 1

28.10.2004

Submission:

I am not sure what Mr. Chibane means in this context by the Z-coordinate. Altitude is normally expressed in feet/meter above mean sea level (QNH), or as a level above a certain reference datum (1013,2 HPa / 29.92 Inches of mercury), called Flight level. In the vicinity of an Aerodrome altitude should be referenced to mean sea level (QNH), since the height of Flight levels will vary with the local pressure and thus render it useless for measuring height above ground. Mr. Chibanes method of using the highest of the Minimum sector altitudes, rounded upward to the nearest thousand feet, seems like a good practice for choosing Transition Altitude.
