Reversal

18.06.2007

Submission:

I have a question for the discussion board concerning course reversals. 8168 Vol II, paragraph 3.5.3 states: “Entry into a reversal procedure should be from a track within ± 30° of the outbound track (see Figures I-4-3-4 and I-4-3-5). Where entry is desired from tracks outside these limits, suitably protected airspace must be provided to allow the pilot to manoeuvre onto the outbound track. This manoeuvring will be in accordance with the entry procedures associated with a suitably located holding pattern, which must be shown on the approach chart (see Figure I-4-3-6).” Do you know of any situations that allow for an entry outside the ± 30° limits that do not include the use of a holding pattern? For example say I was arriving via a STAR. Figure I-4-3-6 pretty much shows the requirement of a holding pattern but though I’d ask anyway.

Answer or Commentary:

It does seem a bit funny to design a reversal to go into the reversal procedure. However Pans-Ops is quite explicit on that point. I would probably design something that went directly onto intermediate approach. For example a DME arc with a lead in radial.
