Submission:

How does one depict the profile for Base turn approaches without DME, ie. a VOR or a
NDB only procedure.

There are two trains of thought among us. The first one is that as a designer, no descent in a turn is accounted for. This is so as to the acheive allowable descent gradiants in all speeds and wind conditions. Therefore the profile should be drawn with a flat segment at the turn area.

See figure 1

The second option is from a pilots point of view. Pilots estimate the height loss required, factor in the speed wind etc. to estimate where they need to start a descent so as to give a constant rate of descent on the turn and into final. Thus a turn with a descent is shown in the profile at the turn area. With all the current CFIT discussions this makes sense as well.

See figure 2

Does anyone have an opinion or any ICAO type documentation on the which standard should be used?

Out of the 2 options I personally would go for option 2 (fig. 2). In fact, we usually combine the 2 options as in figure 3. I do not think that ICAO has an actual standard for that. )
