Lateral separation 1

14.01.2010

Submission:

The New Zealand position, when I was there, was that lateral separation existed when the relevant primary areas were separated by 1NM. After discussions with the Airways corporation procedure design chief, the New Zealand CAA adopted this for the RNP procedures as well, incorporating the primary areas of whatever navigational solution was used for either track.

There has been considerable work on RNAV route lateral separation for the Trans-Tasman RNP routes. I have heard that ICAO is working on lateral separation issues for RNAV in non-Oceanic environments, and I would be interested in comments on what is available for parallel track situations using a particular RNAV standard. I was informed that it will be some time before ICAO come up with a lateral separation standard for parallel tracks either same or opposite direction.
