Intermediate segment length
28.10.2004
Submission:
I have seen many procedures applying intermediate segment length shorter than the recommended 5 NM (case of straight transition from initial, general (not ILS)). (i.e. the Germans have 1NM). I understand the need of stabilizing the aircraft, and handling mechanization, which is carried during this stage of flight. As 5 NM takes a lot of airspace (which is almost limiting in CR) we try to use 3NM (min between LLZ and GP interception, transition angles up to 90° from initial) as standard and even there are cases when we use a little shorter. What is your practical experience with such cases?

Answer or Commentary:
(I.W. Unfortunately in Europe where airspace is at a premium I have noticed that the intermediate segment is the first place where cuts in the approach procedure, if required, are made. I am not so sure as to how critical this stabilization phase of flight is with modern preprogrammed aircraft. The entire segment, as initially envisaged many years ago, may be totally redundant.)
