ILS Climb gradient

15.05.2006

Submission:

The US does not permit increased climb gradients on ILS Cat I approaches--there is no option except the 40:1 slope (2.5%). Of course, Pans Ops does permit higher climb gradients (with the publishing of minima for both the 40:1 and for the higher climb gradient).

If a Category I ILS has a climb gradient published, can the runway also have a Category II/III ILS (presumably also with a climb gradient)? We can not find anything that prohibits the publishing of a Category II/III approach on a runway with a Category I climb gradient. (Of course, the Cat II/III probably could not be flown if the aircrew cannot accept the climb gradient.) Does anyone have any experience with this?

Answer or Commentary:

I did not find anything either that prohibits Cat. II/III with a climb gradient greater than the standard 2.5%. an OCA/H for a missed approach climb gradient of 2.5% would have to be published and I also think that this case will make Cat. III operations unfeasible.)
