Holding Template

28.10.2004

Submission:

Dear colleagues, I the student from the St.-Petersburg Academy of a civil Aviation. By activity with Doc.8168 (its Russian translation) I had problems with construction of a template of a holding pattern, it is possible because of inexact translation. Could you tell me about criteria of construction of a point n3, because I have not found them in this translation.

The English version of Doc. 8168 (Pans-Ops) is also not so clear as to the exact way to determine the position of "n3", so I don't think it is the translation. You need to read a bit between the lines and check the results against existing examples. As far as I could see "n3" is determined in the same way as "n4", paragraphs 3.3.2.2.2.5 and 3.3.2.2.2.6 . That means that you have to draw a vertical line down from "i3" for a distance of "r" then from this position a further vertical line down of "r" to determine "n3". So in fact n3 is 2r (the diameter of the nominal turn) down from "i3". Obviously when I say vertical I mean a line at 90° to the nominal track. Diagram III-C-6 in Doc 8168 shows the mark where the first vertical line is drawn to and where the line/arc for "n3" starts from.)
