Holding / Reversal 1

28.10.2004

Submission:

I would like to hear from other specialists about the following case. The requirement for the missed approach is to turn right at a given distance, follow radial XXX from the VOR/DME and enter holding pattern at XX D from the same VOR/DME. But, the minimum holding altitude is about 4200ft and the aircraft, following the 2.5% MA CG will reach the holding fix at about 3200ft (until that point it is clear of obstacles according to the MA OC criteria, but once it enters the holding pattern, the OC criteria for holding apply which are more restrictive). Am i wrong somewhere in my assumptions, what is the solution (how to implement climb into holding without compromising OC criteria), or should I change the approach completely? How about establishing a racetrack at the same place with the holding and climbing in the racetrack until reaching MNM Holding Altitude. If you can help with somewhat detailed proposals (and explanations or reference to literature or published procedure) I would very much appreciate it.

As far as I can see you have 3 options:

Increase the track miles to the holding fix

Raise the OCA/H

Raise the missed approach climb gradient.

If the difference was smaller (i.e. not 1000 ft) one could track on a radial to the downwind leg of the holding pattern and then turn inbound to the holding fix (see diagram). By doing so one could argue that the aircraft was still on the missed approach until it crossed the holding fix and entered the hold. However you would still have to design the turn protection areas at the turning point.)
