GPS missed approach 1

25.10.2004

Submission:

The situation is similar as in case of conventional missed approach. Diagrams solve the situation depicted. Maybe the description can solve the problem or more diagrams showing the critical case.

It should be rather "line" like K-K one. But I hope the designers will pick the right solution if they think of it. It is transparent when using the "worst case position", whether you use outer side line or inner one as indicated by the "green" and "blue" areas.

To the case depicted for GPS: Why is there not included turn waypoint? It would reduce the area requirements. We use to use them taking care not to be sooner than the SOC (obstacle clearance also provided :-).

Positioning of TP:

If the case do not badly need the early turn to avoid obstacle or airspace we try to keep "certain" straight segment after MAPt as the crews reports some amount of workload during this stage of flight which can even accidentally increase in critical cases.

Answer or Commentary:

(I.W I definitely agree that a missed approach turning waypoint tightens up the missed approach significantly and reduces the obstacle protection area required. If we are designing the missed approach turn protection areas from the start of climb (SOC) even with a turn at the missed approach. It seems logical to position a missed approach turning waypoint at the SOC, or after, to eliminate a significant amount of obstacle protection area prior to this point.)
