Final Approach Alignment 3

28.10.2004

Submission:

I have calculated the descent gradient and I can estimate the FAF altitude. How do I find the location FAF? I mean where is it (from the VOR/DME or from threshold it doesn't matter). How can I define the beginning of final approach segment and design this segment? How to calculate the distance (DME) to the FAF?

I have grouped this question with the gating discussion as it shows the practicalities of the criteria. Firstly this problem can be easily solved if one has a mathematically correct computer graphics tool such as Autocad or Bently micro-station. If one doesn't have such a computer graphics tool then it is a little bit more difficult. I have drawn the diagram again with everything labelled to help in the following explanation. I have also included a practical example.

If any of the procedure designers out there see that I have missed a criteria or that my calculator doesn't work properly please let me know.)
