Final approach alignment 1

28.10.2004

Submission:

I read your response to Bill Frenz' question concerning the final approach alignment. There is some confusion for me. In your response you replied... "The short answer is that the final course must intercept the extended centreline "before" the 1400m point if not within 5° of the extended centreline." Does this mean "before" the 1400m point as viewed from the pilot on approach, or "before" the 1400m point as in starting from threshold and intercepting before reaching 1400m from threshold? In TERPS this intercept point must occur between threshold and 5200'' from threshold. I would relate the 5200'' to Pans-Ops 1400m. The precise question is...Must the final approach course cross runway centreline extended between the threshold and the 1400m point, or at some unlimited distance farther than 1400m from the threshold?

Yes I see how it could be confusing but the way I read the paragraph is farther than 1400m from the threshold. I have included a diagram that may clear the meaning up. In the diagram the final approach track:

1. Cannot cross the red line

2. Must cross the green lines

3. Cannot cross the magenta line unless it has first crossed the green line.)
