DME arc approaches 1

28.10.2004

Submission:

DME arc approaches are recognised initial approach segments. They are useful for conserving airspace, though present some challenge to the pilot when flying them. The minimum DME distance used is 7NM. Both FAA TERPS and ICAO PANS OPS have details, and essentially use the same specifications.

TERPS is a joint civil/military publication and is available on-line at: - http://afpubs.hq.af.mil/pubfiles/af/11/afman11-226/afman11-226.pdf

It is a 29MB file, so you need to be patient as it downloads. You will need Acrobat Reader (available for free download at the site). I would also recommend your Ops dept purchases ICAO PANS OPS Doc 8168 Vol. 1, which outlines instrument procedure design criteria. It is a relatively slim publication available for order from the ICAO web site. Hope this helps.
