Descent in the hold

30.10.2007

Submission:

I have a question about climb and descent in the holding pattern. Which is the approved rate of climb/descent in the holding pattern in normal conditions?

And second one. In which part of the holding pattern is it approved to start to descend? Only on the outbound leg, or is descent possible in all parts of the holding pattern including turns and the inbound leg?

Maybe some of the pilots could answer this one.

From an ATC point of view:

1.) I would expect a descent of 1000 ft a minute in normal conditions
2.) I do not think that it matters at which stage of the holding pattern you descend in as long as you do not descend below the Obstacle Clearance Altitude (OCA).
