A cheap turn

22.06.2009

Submission:

I ran across this term in the Doc 8168 and did not understand what it meant or how this is applied. "free turn back to a waypoint". I totally undestand the 5-120° rule but I don't understand the exception at least in terms stated as "free turn back to a waypoint". There is no example or further explanation.

Here is the paragraph:

"Part III Section 3, Chapter 1 1.4.1.3 In order for the aircraft to properly execute the turn, each single specified turn should be a least 5 degree and must not exceed 120 degree. however, the maximums value of 120 degree dose not apply to the case of turn (at either altitude/height or at a designated TP) with a free turn back to the waypoint.

I am not sure but I think it means a manual turn followed by a direct to or a course to a fix.

A free turn back to a waypoint means a DF leg.
